In 2004, Richard Liu established Jingdong, and 360buy Ltd, which later changed to JD.Com. Richard is the Chairman and the Chief Executive Officer of the firm. Liu Qiangdong was born and raised in Chang’an, a small village located outside the city of Suquin in the Jiangsu Province of China. When growing up, Liu did not have the opportunity to use running water and electricity. Richard’s parents had come from a wealthy family that transported goods from the Yangtze River. However, when Richard was born, the family was not wealthy, and his parents were working on a rice plantation.
Being the youngest, Richard was left home with his maternal grandmother, who taught him how to use what you have been given. Richard stayed home helping his grandmother make dishes from what they could afford, mostly corn and sweet potatoes. Even though Liu and his grandmother occasionally would visit the market to purchase meat and Richard saw his grandmother bribe the meat vendor with peanuts for the fattiest meat available. The fattiest meat helped the family to have fat to cook for a whole year. Richard Liu’s mind for innovation was discovered when he was a young boy; he would use hot water to separate the oil from the pan and use it for soup.
Despite growing up in a region where opportunities seemed limited, Liu was ambitious; he wanted to be a village after seeing how they enjoyed a huge amount of pork meat in the market. Although he did not want to have the meat all by himself, he wanted the leadership position to help those who could not afford the meat. After High school, Liu got an opportunity to study at Renmin University; his village people stood by him and supported his journey to the city. His dreams were realized after he established several businesses before settling down to one of the largest online shopping platforms in the world, known as JD.Com. Richard Liu is dedicated to ensuring the success of the company.
